European Union and Ethiopia clash over an air-bridge for aid to Tigray

Is Ethiopia on a collision course with European Union?

Josep Borell, EU Commission Vice President made this statement in a public briefing on 12 July:

“The Tigray region is in a serious humanitarian crisis, with almost 1, 850,000 at risk of famine…The Tigray region is being cut from the rest of the world by destroying critical infrastructure and transportation. This could bring the region to a mass famine. We at the European Union, the Commission, will organise an air-bridge to try to bring support to the region.”

Mr Borell went on to explain that this was a massive crisis which was beyond the ability the EU alone to deal with.

Now the Ethiopian authorities appear to have ruled out an air-bridge.

The Ethiopia News Agency reports that:

“The National Disaster Risk Management Commission (NDRMC) announced that activities to deliver humanitarian assistance to Tigray Region through direct flight or any other means that violates the sovereignty of the country is not permitted.”

This prohibition is in contrast to the situation that prevailed in 1984-85. Then the Ethiopian government permitted the British to use the Royal Air Force to make air drops to the starving.

This was called “Operation Bushel” and is remembered to this day.

It is hard to see why flying aid to the starving would be a “violation of the sovereignty of the country” if Ethiopia gave this idea the go-ahead.

So is Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed apparently blocking a way of saving the lives of thousands?

  1. This is a deliberate action to starve the people of Tigray. Denying food to innocent people is a war crime.
This has been happening for the last 8 months on top of aerial bombardment of innocent civilians, killing, raping, looting, destruction of infrastructure, factories and hospitals by ENDF, Eritrean Army and Amhara militia.
The IC has to intervene. These atrocities need to stop now.

    1. Aid groups can fly to Tigray, but the aid must be searched based on Addis first. I got no problem at all. Do you think the government loot the aid? No! The Ethiopian government fear is the aid groups are planned by westerns to provide military weapons to the terrorist groups on the way while the aid groups carrying aids. Hiding weapons in the grain? No way! So it doesn’t make sanse what’s their problems not the aid plane searched first?

      1. What kind of military weapons are you talking about? Tanks, missiles, or AK-47s? The latest versions of these weapons are supplied to TDF by Abiy himself. So your concern is misplaced.

  2. We never ever any one can see prehistoric of Ethiopia, and we can’t allow to leave our sovereignty right to any world country.we know what those aid group plan to Ethiopian country, all Ethiopian people we stand by with our government and defense to our sovereignty

    1. No we Don’t stand.
Tigree people are fighting for their self determination right. The long time marginalized peoples like Oromo, Somalis etc all cherish that right. Abiy and Amhara are moving earth and sky to eradicate the little self governance these people during the era of EPRDF. That is the no1 principle of MADAMAR.

We, the long marginalized share same ideals and we stand by their side. The chorus you hear is the puppet reationary leadership Abiy put on these people, not from the mass.

  3. Abiy and company should be allowed to kill and mayhem Tigray. Why are European and Americans wasting previous time by trying to reason with thugs? Please use your might to help the people. Abiy and his accomplices do have an iota of kindness to help.

    1. Abiy and company should not be allowed to kill and mayhem Tigray. Why are European and Americans wasting previous time by trying to reason with thugs? Please use your might to help the people. Abiy and his accomplices do have an iota of kindness to help.

  4. The international community has a choice, now. does it save one man, Abiy or the 7 million Tegaru. This is a soul searching choice. It will be very hard and very difficult to understand why the International Community would not intervene to save the people of Tigray. Additionally, the integrity of the International community, the UN will be placed in a question mark.

  5. Abiy is a killer of civilians. Europeans and Americans you destroyed him straight away .what you waiting for to kill his own people and country .shame on you

  6. Didn’t you write this 10 years ago?

Stop being obtuse about why the Ethiopian government is not allowing aid.
