The Ethiopia famine, the TPLF diverting aid for weapons and British policy

This article looks at allegations that the Tigray People’s Liberation Front diverted a substantial proportion of aid from the victims of the 1984 – 85 famine to buy weapons.

It also consider whether the British government under Mrs Thatcher plotted to overthrow the Mengistu government.

  1. Famine is not only an issue of adverse nature or natural disasters. It is also and issue of Governance and policy choices and prioritization that are made. In the case of Ethiopia famine is very much linked to war and aggression and often it is linked to changes government. Pankhurst wrote a book on the issue. In recent times the two dates that come to mind are 1974 – was followed with the removal of Emperor Haile Selassie; 1984 – is eventually linked to the fall of Mengistu
