As part of its world report 2018, Human Rights Watch published a report on the events in Eritrea over 2017. It gives a brief and easy to read sum-up of the human rights situation in the country, as well as highlighting key events in and around Eritrea that happened in 2017.
This includes, for example:
- Eritrean/Swedish journalist Dawit Isaak winning the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s World Press Freedom Prize
- Eritrean Orthodox Church Patriarch Abune Antonios attending a church service in July, only to disappear again right after
- The suppression of the protest around the Islamic school in Asmara, Al Diaa, on 31 October, which triggered many diaspora protests elsewhere too
- Withdrawal of Qatar troops from the Eritrea/Djibouti border
- And many other things
