Human Rights Watch publishes its annual report on Eritrea

As part of its world report 2018, Human Rights Watch published a report on the events in Eritrea over 2017. It gives a brief and easy to read sum-up of the human rights situation in the country, as well as highlighting key events in and around Eritrea that happened in 2017.

This includes, for example:

  • Eritrean/Swedish journalist Dawit Isaak winning the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization‚Äôs World Press Freedom Prize
  • Eritrean Orthodox Church Patriarch Abune Antonios attending a church service in July, only to disappear again right after
  • The suppression of the protest around the¬†Islamic school in Asmara, Al Diaa, on 31 October, which triggered many diaspora protests elsewhere too
  • Withdrawal of Qatar troops from the Eritrea/Djibouti border
  • And many other things
